The SoundDock® Portable digital music system has an integral rechargeable lithium-ion battery which makes the system fully portable. It incorporates U.S. patented waveguide speaker technology which enables it to amplify low frequencies more efficiently. The system also features a built-in carry handle and innovative rotating dock for protection during transit.
Be sure to place the SoundDock® Portable system on a firm and level surface that is free from sand, dirt and other debris. Exposure to such elements can interfere with the dock and prevent it from opening properly.
Yes. The SoundDock® Portable system charges your iPod or iPhone while it is in the dock. The system will start charging your iPod or iPhone as soon as you insert it in the dock, whether powered by battery or the power supply. If your iPod or iPhone is inactive for approximately 10 minutes, the system goes to sleep and suspends iPod charging. Since an iPod/iPhone uses lithium-based rechargeable batteries, you don't need to be concerned about a memory effect.
You can control iPod/iPhone volume using the buttons on the side of your SoundDock® Portable system, and you can use the SoundDock® Portable system remote to control the system volume and turn your iPod or iPhone on or off. You can also use the remote to control basic iPod/iPhone functions, such as: - Play/pause: pause and resume play
- Track seek: skip to the beginning of a previous track and scan backward, advance to the next track, skip tracks, and scan forward within a track
- Playlist select: select your next or previous playlist
Yes. Any music player that uses an output cable terminating in a stereo mini-plug can connect to the SoundDock® Portable system auxiliary port on the back of the system. However, the SoundDock® Portable system remote control will not control the connected player. You will need to use the controls on the connected player.
Yes. The system features shielded speakers that limit the possibility of video interference if you place it near a computer monitor display or video screen.

This small light informs you of the state of the system. The light is: - Off: when the battery is fully charged and the system is on or off, playing or inactive
- Green: when you touch a button on the remote or on the SoundDock® Portable system. The light blinks several times when the volume reaches maximum or minimum levels
- Yellow: when the system battery is charging. If the light remains yellow after 10 hours of recharging, the battery needs to be replaced
- Red (blinking): when the system battery needs charging. This requires plugging in the system
The light also indicates the level of battery power when you press and hold the Off button on the remote: - Red: 20% or less full power
- Yellow: from 20% to 70% full power
- Green: above 70% full power
When your SoundDock® Portable system is plugged into an AC outlet, it charges both the system battery and your iPod or iPhone (whether it's playing or not). When your system is not plugged in, it draws power from the battery. Be sure to use only the battery included with your system or a replacement battery.
You can get three hours of battery life at full volume, though the system can run for much longer if you keep the volume lower.

The rechargeable lithium-ion battery powering the SoundDock® Portable system has been custom-designed to undergo hundreds of charge cycles before needing replacement.
A “charge cycle” consists of using 100% of the battery’s capacity and then recharging the battery back to 100%. If the battery is drained halfway and then charged back to full capacity, this only counts as half a charge cycle; so several listening and charging sessions spread out over several days may equal one complete charge cycle.
To extend the overall life of the battery as much as possible, the SoundDock® Portable system electronics have been designed to provide a slower charge than conventional systems. This means that although each charge cycle diminishes the battery slightly, the battery is capable of hundreds of charge cycles. For instance, after 300 charge cycles or three years, the SoundDock® Portable system battery still will have about 70% of its original capacity. Eventually (like all rechargeable batteries), it may need to be replaced when it no longer provides adequate power after charging.
Lithium-ion batteries do not have the same kind of memory issues commonly associated with older NiCd rechargeable batteries, so it is not necessary to fully drain a SoundDock® Portable system battery before recharging it. However, to maximize the accuracy of the LED charge indicator, we recommend that you fully discharge and then fully charge the battery at least once a month. The battery has been designed such that it can be plugged into AC power at all times, so there is no need to unplug the system once the battery is fully charged.
If the battery will not be used for a long period of time, it is best to store it near room temperature and at less than half charged. Batteries should not be stored for more than 6 months without use, and they never should be stored in refrigerators or near heat sources.
In general, to maximize battery life, batteries should be kept out of extreme hot or cold temperature conditions and out of direct sunlight. As a safety feature, the SoundDock® Portable system battery may turn itself off in the most extreme temperature conditions. It will be necessary to plug the system in to make the battery turn back on.

On January 1, 2008 the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) instituted a new safety rule regarding air travel with lithium batteries. This has prompted a number of inquires concerning the rule’s impact to SoundDock® Portable systems. The below information will both educate you on the rule, as well as explain its impact to owners of SoundDock® Portable systems. There are two options for travelling with the SoundDock® Portable system on a plane; either packing it in checked luggage or bringing it in carry-on baggage. Under the new rule, you can bring batteries with up to eight (8) grams of equivalent lithium-ion content on board an airplane in carry-on luggage. The SoundDock® Portable system uses a lithium-ion battery that contains 2.66 grams of equivalent lithium-ion material, well below the TSA limit. With the battery attached and the system turned off, the SoundDock® Portable system may also be packed within checked baggage. Instructions for packing SoundDock® Portable in checked luggage: - Install the battery in the SoundDock® Portable system
- Pack the system carefully in checked luggage
Instructions for bringing SoundDock® Portable in carry-on baggage: - Install the battery in the SoundDock® Portable system
- Pack the system carefully in either the SoundDock® Portable Bag or in a personal carry-on bag
The new rule also calls out that spare batteries (batteries not installed in the device) cannot be packed within checked luggage. They must be packed in carry-on baggage. For customers who own a spare SoundDock® Portable battery, it may be packed in carry-on baggage as long as actions are taken to ensure that the battery will not short-circuit (also a new requirement under new regulations). This can be accomplished by doing one of the following: - Place tape across the battery's contacts to isolate terminals.
- Place the battery in its original packaging or closeable plastic bag
Please note: You should ensure that a loose battery does not come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry.
Listed below you will find a chart that summarizes the new rule as it pertains to owners of SoundDock® Portable systems. At this time, these rules apply only to U.S. airport security checkpoints and flights originating and terminating in the US. For further information on the new rule you can go to:http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html | GUIDE TO RULES EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2008 | | Type Of Battery/Batteries | In Checked Baggage | In Carry-On Baggage | Lithium-Ion Battery Installed in a Device
