Placing Your Environmental Speakers

The following guidelines give you our suggestions for arranging your environmental speakers. We recommend that you try alternate arrangements of the speakers to take advantage of the unique sound characteristics of your space. For a more detailed explanation of how to set up your BOSE® product, please refer to your owner's guide. To view an online version of it, please click here.

FreeSpace® 51 environmental speakers
Prior to installation, carefully select locations for your FreeSpace® 51 speakers. The speakers can be installed on almost any surface such as wood, concrete or the ground. When choosing a location, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  1. Select a level surface for your speakers. This will prevent movement or vibration during use.
  2. Place your speakers where the speaker cord cannot be tripped over, pinched or pulled.
  3. Do not place your speakers in an area where water tends to collect.
  4. Do not bury your FreeSpace® 51 speakers deeper than 18.4cm.
  5. Use wood screws to fasten the speaker to a wood surface, such as a deck, if desired.

For best results, mount both speakers on the same wall, facing the listening area. Make sure they do not face each other. Outdoors, if you are not using an existing wall, consider the length of your listening area as your "wall." The speakers should be placed at least 2m apart.

Your 251® environmental speakers are not magnetically shielded. Keep them at least 23cm from any video screen or monitor. If you place your speakers outdoors, you will probably connect them to an amplifier or receiver that is inside.

Note: You may want to consult an electrical installer who can route wires underground or through walls if necessary.

Please consider the following before mounting your speakers:

  1. Measure the length of speaker wire you need to connect each speaker to your receiver or amplifier.
  2. It is important that the speaker wire not be tripped over, pinched or pulled. Determine the best route to protect the wire.

Note: This product is not intended for use on boats.

Caution
Do not mount on surfaces that are not sturdy enough or that have hazards concealed behind them, such as plumbing or electrical wire. If you are unsure about installing these speakers, contact a qualified professional installer.

For best results, mount both speakers on the same wall, facing the listening area. Make sure they do not face each other. Outdoors, if you are not using an existing wall, consider the length of your listening area as your "wall."

Measure the length of the wall and divide by six. Place one speaker one sixth of the length from the left end of the wall. Place the other speaker one sixth of the length from the right end. If you place your speakers outdoors, you will probably connect them to an amplifier or receiver that is inside.

Note: You may want to consult an electrical installer who can route wires underground or through walls if necessary.

Whether you mount them inside or out, consider the following:

  1. Measure the length of speaker cord you need to connect each speaker to your receiver or amplifier.
  2. It is important that the speaker cord not be tripped over, pinched or pulled. Determine the best route to protect the wire.
  3. Regardless of where you place your speakers, make sure they cannot fall and cause injuries.

151 speakers are not magnetically shielded. Keep them at least 23cm from any video screen or monitor.

On a boat, you can surface-mount the speakers or mount them flush to the bulkhead.

Note: Magnets in the speakers will affect a boat compass. Consider this in choosing a speaker location, or make sure to correct for this deviation.

To flush-mount 151 speakers in a boat, you must cut a hole in the bulkhead for each speaker. You may want to consult a marine electronics installer (employed by most boatyards) before cutting any holes.

Caution
Do not mount on surfaces that are not sturdy enough or that have hazards concealed behind them, such as plumbing or electrical wire. If you are unsure about installing these speakers, contact a qualified professional installer.

When selecting locations for your speakers, understand that there are two possible mounting options. It is easiest to mount the speakers from behind the mounting surface. However, if you cannot reach behind the mounting surface, you may cut a larger hole that allows you to insert the speaker enclosure from the front of the mounting surface. With this in mind, find a location that:

  1. Allows sufficient room to snap on the grille. Use the template to be sure there is enough area around the holes you will cut in the bulkhead.
  2. Allows sufficient room for the speaker enclosure behind the bulkhead. During installation, the enclosure requires 11cm of mounting depth. However, once installed, the enclosure requires only 8cm of mounting depth and 32.4cm of extension. The enclosure may be rotated in a complete circle, but attaches to the mounting flange in only one position.
  3. Accommodates the speaker wire provided. Lay out lengths of wire that reach comfortably from the receiver to each speaker. Be sure the wires are secure and protected from being pinched, pulled or damaged in any way.

Note: The magnets in the speakers will affect a boat compass. Avoid mounting the speakers closer than 0.9m from the compass. If necessary, a marine installer can help correct any deviation.
